August 24, 2007 – Research by Ibis and colleagues at PATH and the Population Council is highlighted in the current id21 focus, dedicated this month to the topic of unsafe abortion. Conducted before Mexico City’s recent move to legalize abortion, the study sought to estimate the economic costs of unsafe abortion from the perspective of the Mexico City health care system. It concluded that improved access to safe abortion would likely result in significant cost savings, in part by reducing the incidence of complications from unsafe abortion.
